Leaves, Grass, and Other Yard Wastes
The best management technique is the oldest - make a pile and let them decompose into rich organic humus. Leaves are an excellent addition to kitchen scrap compost bins (the District sells compost bins at subsidized prices). If you do not have a place to compost on your property, yard wastes are accepted at the Johnson Transfer Station. Beginning July 1, 2016 the State of Vermont bans the "knowing disposal" of this material.
Leaves, Grass Clippings and Clean Wood, defined as: source-separated vegetative matter including grass clippings, leaves, kraft bags, and brush 1-inch or less in diameter is now banned from disposal. It must be bagged in a kraft bag in order to be accepted at the Stowe and Worcester Transfer Stations.
It can be left loose to be taken to the Johnson Transfer Station.
